2012 BMW M5 Redesign

The next-generation 2012 BMW M5 stands more than a quarter-century of tradition firmly on its head by adopting a torque-laden, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine–bringing to an end an illustrious era of high-revving, naturally aspirated power plants for the iconic performance sedan first introduced in 1984. The 2012 BMW M5 front angle 580x353 2012 BMW M5 Re designlatest vehicle to receive the “upgrade” is the 2012 BMW 5 Series. The 2012 BMW M5 rides on a reworked version of the latest 5-series’ aluminum-intensive chassis that uses a double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension–the first time the BMW sedan has used such a setup. An exhaustive test and development program, which included more than 6,000 miles of running at the Nürburgring, has resulted in unique spring and damper settings on this 2012 BMW M5. BMW claims the new 2012 BMW M5 will hit 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds, or 6.3 seconds with the 8-speed automatic. Considering that we’ve seen times in the low-four-second range for the last-gen M5, we won’t be surprised if the acceleration of this 2012 BMW M5 estimate turns out to be conservative.

BMW has already announced that the new 2012 BMW M5 specs would bring back 4-cylinder engines to North America, and the German automaker is doing it in a big way, replacing the standard inline-six with a new turbocharged 4-banger across its 2012 BMW M5 lineup. Starting for the 2012 BMW M5 model year, the 528i will drop the 3.0-liter six in favor of a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The power of this 2012 BMW M5 will increase slightly from 240-hp to 245-hp, while torque gets a more significant increase rising from 230 lb-ft to 258 lb-ft. Plus, all of that torque will come on at just 1,250 rpm. The obvious changes in the 2012 BMW M5 are a deeper front bumper and the flares are a bit more pronounced in the fenders.

As with the previous two generations of the M5, the 2012 BMW M5 will be assembled alongside standard versions of the 2012 BMW 5 Series, the 2012 BMW 6 Series and the 7-series in Germany. Along with standard versions, indications are that the 2012 BMW M5 will also be sold with optional all-wheel drive at a later date in a bid to increase BMW’s penetration in key North American snow-belt states. The 2012 BMW M5 bowed in concept form at the Shanghai motor show this spring and arrives in production guise this fall at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. The 2012 BMW M5 will fight the Cadillac CTS-V, the Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG, the Jaguar XFR, the Lexus IS F and the Audi S6 for attention among luxury buyers.
